A solution of hydrogen bromide in water is one of the strongest acids (stronger than hydrochloric acid). Pure hydrobromic acid – colorless, in the air browns (slowly oxidizes, releasing bromine). It is a strong reducing agent. The salts of hydrobromic acid are called bromides. Hydrobromic acid is an alkylation catalyst in organic synthesis.
