It is used as a reagent for the detection and separation of ions Fe, Al, Be, Hg, Ti, Zr, Tl, U, etc. Sulfosalicylic acid is used in analytical chemistry as a masking agent for some metals and for spectrophotometric determination of Fe, U, Be; due to the ability to precipitate proteins from their solutions, it is used for the nephelometric determination of proteins (eg, albumin in the urine). Sulfosalicylic acid and its salts have an antiseptic effect. The chemical causes the precipitation of dissolved proteins, which is measured from the degree of turbidity. It is also used for integral colour anodizing. With water it is used as a shuttle solution for the CAS assay to test for siderophore.
