Description

D-(-)-Tartaric Acid is found in loquat. D-Tartaric acid is found combined as Chicoric acid and it is an unnatural tartaric acid isomer. D-Tartaric acid belongs to the family of Dicarboxylic Acids and Derivatives. These are organic compounds containing exactly two carboxylic acid groups. D-tartaric acid is obtained by the action of mineral acids on its acidic potassium salt (tartar), formed during the fermentation of grape juice.  During pyrolysis, D-tartaric acid is decarboxylated to form pyruvic CH3 (CO) COOH and pyruvic (methylsuccinic) HOPSCH (CH3) CH2COOH acids.  It is reduced to succinic acid, recovers the ammonia solution AgNO3 to Ag;  in an alkaline medium dissolves Cu (OH) 2 to form a clear bright blue solution, the Feling reagent. It is used in the food industry (food additive E334), in medicine, in analytical chemistry for the detection of aldehydes, sugars, etc., in the chemical and pharmacological industry for the separation of racemates of organic substances into isomers.  The salts of tartaric acid (tartrates) are used in medicine, for dyeing fabrics, etc.
