Gold Chloride Trihydrate

Properties

Gold chloride trihydrate is solid crystals or lumps of yellow-orange color. It belongs to inorganic compounds with molar mass 357.362 g/mol. The substance is very soluble in alcohol and water, at the same time, it does not dissolve in ether, alkali and other metals. Melting point of this chemical is 254 °C.

Gold chloride trihydrate is intended for research uses and usually acts as a gold catalyst and as source of gold for organic reactions. It may also be used in determination of alkaloids. Microanalysis of cesium or rubidium is one more situation in which this inorganic is used. Some scientists use it as a harbinger for the preparation of gold nanoparticles.

Safety and Storage Information

Gold chloride trihydrate is considered as extremely dangerous skin, eye and mucous membrane irritant. Its prolonged contact with skin usually results in severe burns, while in eyes it causes permanent damage. That’s why it is important to remember basic safety precautions:

  • Why handling the compound, proper personal protective equipment (protective gloves, clothing, splash-proof safety goggles and face protection) is a must.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while working with the chemical.
  • Avoid inhaling vapor or dust.
  • If swallowed, get medical aid immediately. Do not try to induce vomiting.
  • In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and flush skin with soap and water for nearly 15 minutes.
  • If in eyes, rinse them with a large amount of water for not less than 15 minutes and call a doctor at once.

Gold chloride trihydrate is stable under normal pressure and temperature. It is recommended to store it in closed container at room temperature. The compound should be protected from heat, light, moisture and incompatibles.
