1-Phenyl-2-nitropropene

1-Phenyl-2-nitropropene is an organic chemical compound. It is also known as P2NP, β-methyl-β-nitropropene, phenyl-2-nitropropene, and (2-Nitro-1-propenyl) benzene. The substance is a crystalline powder of yellow color with chemical formula C9H9NO2 and CAS number 705-60-2. The molar mass of 1-Phenyl-2-nitropropene is 163.17 g mol−1; its melting point is 64 to 66 °C.

Production and Use

The compound is produced as the result of the reaction between nitroethane and benzaldehyde in presence of a basic catalyst. In the course of the reaction, the base deprotonates nitroethane and a resonance-stabilized anion is formed. The anion adds to the aldehyde and forms a beta nitro alcohol, which in its turn is dehydrated to yield nitroalkene. The chemists call the whole process a nitroaldol reaction.

1-Phenyl-2-nitropropene is mainly used for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, particularly the drug Adderall which treats ADHD and narcolepsy. It is a precursor in making methamphetamine and related compounds. Besides, the compound is known for its herbicide and antibacterial properties.
